Energy Management Systems

Energy Management Systems (EMS) are used for the continuous and systematic identification of energy flows, and at the same time providing a justification tool for the need to take concrete measures and interventions to improve energy performance.

An EMS includes all the necessary organizational and technical structures, processes and tools for energy management. The main reasons for implementing an EMS is the organization and monitoring of all energy consumption data, justification of necessary actions/measures that must be taken and the documentation and monitoring of the results from their implementation.

An EMS is applicable to both small and large end-use energy conusmers, with simple or complex processes. More specifically, it can be applied to energy-intensive industries, SMEs, public sector organizations, buildings and businesses in the tertiary sector etc.

The main reasons for implementing an EMS are:

  1. Reduction of operating costs
    Obviously, a decrease in energy consumption results in a decrease of the operating costs. This results in increased liquidity and improved competitiveness for the enterprise. The implementation of an EMS may provide energy savings of up to 15% only due to the more rational use of the existing installations. This figure could rise to 25-30% through the implementation of low-cost energy efficiency measures with a simple pay-back period of 0.5 – 2 years.
  2. Protecting the environment
    The reduction in energy consumption corresponds to a decrease in CO2 emission. It would also provide better working conditions.
  3. Improving the social and environmental profile
    With the implementation of an EMS the social, and environmental profile of an enterprise is significantly upgraded.

Some of the reasons why EMS are not being currently implemented are:

  • There is no staff member with assigned responsibilities for energy consumption.
  • The energy costs are treated as fixed costs.
  • Employees who are responsible for the operation of the company’s installations think that they are functioning optimally and that, and any attempt to further analyze their operation may hamper their operation.

HELESCO recognizes the need to promote energy management issues and is therefore able to offer the following energy services:

  • Energy audit of existing installations (collection and analysis of the operational parameters and existing energy consumption data of the installations, measurement and monitoring of the aforementioned with HELESCOs own monitoring equipment).
  • Energy report (survey and assessment of the existing situation, identification of possible energy efficiency measures, recommendations for the possible installation of an EMS).
  • Briefing the enterprise on the current situation and agreeing on a more extensive audit of the installations (i.e. for specific production areas, equipment etc).
  • Installation  of the é.VISOR monitoring system.
  • Monitoring the operation and energy consumption of the enterprise’s facilities via the é.VISOR software (either by HELESCO or even by the enterprise in question).
  • Analysis of the monitoring results, identification of energy indicators, determination of energy consumption threshold values, writing up an energy performance improvement plan.
  • Technical support for the certification of the company in accordance with the ISO 50001 standard.
